$2 For A Bottle Of Water?!

Back in California.

I was hoping for the passport control person to give me a nice and hearty “Welcome back” or “Welcome home”. But instead I got “how old are you?” “you traveling to all these places by yourself?” “what for?” “how did you afford this?”. Homeland Security. Keeping our nation open and safe. Making me a little sad.

Spent the rest of the day with Trish and Phil reorienting myself. Cars aren’t trying to run me over. They are driving on the right. It is so COLD. I understand restaurant conversations. People aren’t looking at me funny. Potable tap water. Air conditioning. I’m using my cell phone again. I’m DRIVING.

Looking forward to the 3rd Annual Stephanie and Danielle Summer Road Trip. Previous routes have included the greater LA area loop (Lompoc, Solvang, Joshua Tree, San Diego) and an extended version of the classic highway 1 drive (the Lost Coast, San Francisco, Santa Cruz, Monterey, Big Sur, Santa Barbara, LA). This year, we’ll be tackling central California (San Francisco, Paso Robles, Santa Ynez, LA, San Diego). Can’t wait.

–a few hours later…–

Singing “Rocketman” with Danielle as we head down the 101 towards Paso Robles. Wide highways, tan rolling hills, warm sun and fresh air. I’m letting California soak itself back into my skin.

Paso Robles- a rustic central california town, surrounded by 180 vineyards. the type of place with simple motels, sears stores, town squares and old fashioned ice cream shops. what I sort of imagined a 1960s California town would have looked like.
