5 Hours In Macau

Today I arrived in Hong Kong around the early afternoon and decided to take a quick day trip into Macau. I won’t attempt to outdo Lei here as he did a much better job covering Macau.

From my hotel I took a cab to the Hong Kong Ferry Terminal where I went up a few floors to get a ticket.

The ticketing process is relatively straightforward; choose your class (I picked economy for about $158 HKD and paid with a credit card) and head down to boarding. A boat leaves at least every half an hour or 15 minutes.

The whole journey to Macau takes about an hour tops.

Once you arrive, you can walk the entire island of Macau on your own. It’s quite compact and taking a taxi in its traffic can take you longer to get around.

I found Macau to be very reminiscent of Las Vegas — gaudy lighting, prostitution, hotels, and gambling while ironically mixed in with some equally family-friendly amenities:

It’s the little side streets that light up at night which gives this place some kind of character:

But don’t be surprised if you catch yourself looking up most of the time:

And while I failed at finding the old colonial part of Macau (I winged this trip without a map or any kind of preparation whatsoever), Lei can fill you in on that part.
