After a magical first day in New Zealand, we got in a late morning and rented an 8 person passenger/soccer mom van for the 2.5 hour drive to Waitomoto for their famous gloworm caves.
For $37.50 NZD per person that we booked ahead online, we were quickly whisked in for our 2:45pm appointment.
Although no photography is allowed, this rule is loosely enforced.
As it got really dark down there, the cave staff were helpful to take many very accurate photos of our group underground.
Yeah, trust me, those photos are legit.
After 30 minutes learning about stalagmite formation and the life of the gloworms from our guide, we then were led to our boats with which we explored the most gloworm-y parts of the caves.
This was the best photo I could get:
Obviously, the staff got way better photos:
Not quite sure where these fit in:
After about 10-15 minutes on our boats we then disembarked to finish our tour.
After a hearty lunch at nearby Huhu Café (thanks Rachel for these photos). . .
. . . we then drove back to Auckland for a pre-planned night of mayhem with Ellena and Amber. What happens in Auckland, stays in Auckland!
…except for this photo:
- At time of posting in Waitomoto Caves, it was 18 °C - Humidity: 84% | Wind Speed: 10km/hr | Cloud Cover: partly cloudy
