In May of 2010, Calvin started The Monsoon Diaries as his personal travel blog to document his own travels while he was a full time medical student, and where he would post daily updates to let the world (and his mom) know he was okay. As his readership expanded, a large humble following of good people asked if they could join along his adventures.

It has since grown into a community of like-minded adventurers who join along on group trips that have been characterized by their spontaneity, affordability, and a curiosity in exploring less-visited destinations. Therefore, what began with informal trips for a few friends has blossomed into the popular travel style known as monsooning, recognized for it’s unconventional approach to travel and its ability to connect travelers who share a passion for exploration and adventure.

Their stories have been featured on CNN, TIME, The Wall Street Journal, BBC, TED, The Huffington Post, NY1, The New York TimesUSA Today, National Geographic, Business Insider, NYPost, and MSNBC. And about every month Calvin himself, and some of his most dedicated repeat monsooners, will lead scores of international young-at-heart travelers on their adventures around the world.

Take a look at any of the offered trips below and sign up even if you’re just curious about travel; we will take care of the rest!

Our annual camping trip in the Tri-State area!

Robbinsville, NJ

Robbinsville, NJ

October 3-5, 2025

3 times a year we’ve gone off-the-grid for an under-the-radar camping trip usually upstate and tucked away in the forests of NY. We do it all: car pools, tents, potluck dinners, and a weekend of getting unplugged. We glamp if it rains. And until now, it’s always been off the books.

This year, we’re flipping the compass and heading south. Our destination: Robbinsville, New Jersey where our campsite this year will be just a short drive from the stunning BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, the largest Hindu temple in the United States. Imagine waking up under the stars, then wandering through marble halls carved straight out of a world away from home

Our camping trips have always been word-of-mouth and off the books. Now, for the first time, we’re putting it on here to add something new: a spiritual landmark that makes this more than just another weekend outdoors.

Bring a sleeping bag, bring your tent, and bring your curiosity.

  • October 3: Arrival into campgrounds close to Robbinsville, NJ
  • October 3-5: Camp, cook, explore, hike, making lifelong memories
  • October 5: Depart home, or stay longer!

WHY SHOULD I GO?

“Momentum comes from pushing, not from planning. Confidence comes from scars and risk, not from indecision.” – Life Doesn’t Start Tomorrow.

It starts with *you*. None of the following will ever matter unless you commit to your decision. Yes, dropping everything for something totally new and unknown can be scary! But nobody ever learned how to ride a bike by reading about it; you have to get on the damn thing! So get on and go!

You might respond with “Yeah, but…” “’Yeah, but…’ is pernicious. Because it makes it sound like we have the best of intentions when really we are just too scared to do what we should. It allows us to be cowards, while sounding noble.” – 3 Reasons to Travel While You’re Young.

Let’s entertain the possibility that you’ll skip out. Then watch us as we come back safe and sound, share our stories, show you our photos, and talk about how our lives have changed. Whether or not you will realize it then, when you have your first child, when in your midlife crisis, or on your deathbed, you’re inevitably going to regret that you missed out on an epic once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. This could set the tone for the rest of your life. Don’t let this happen. Starting slowly never ever works in travel and habits become harder to break once you’ve accustomed yourself to a way of approaching new experiences.

Do you think that to skydive you first have to look it up on Wikipedia, or learn to fall off a table? No. You simply jump. So those of you who want to travel, travel. And imagine how easy traveling will seem to you afterwards. Imagine how much confidence you’ll gain in yourself. Imagine the bragging rights and stories you’ll have when you come home. Not many people realize that the opportunity for a tremendously positive life change is right in front of their faces: This could be the very moment where you turn your life around and finally do something *epic*. The world won’t wait for you.

OK, I'M INTERESTED: How do I pay?

A 50% down payment is needed to secure your spot on the trip. We accept credit cards, cash (in person), PayPal, Zelle, Revolut, Square, Cash App, or Venmo.

What days should I book my flights to arrive?

Depends on what part of the trip you sign up for; please confirm with us directly before purchasing tickets!

I’d love to come, but I’m limited on budget.

Contact us anyway and we can come up with a deal or financial aid packages.

Can I come alone?

Yes, many of our monsooners have joined our trip by themselves and end up meeting a whole new group of friends. We usually attract people who come from a range of backgrounds and have different levels of experience with travel.

What if I don’t usually like traveling with people?

Our trips are designed by independent travelers with independent travel in mind — we want to provide everyone with the opportunity and experience of traveling alone should they choose to. Therefore, there’s zero pressure to stick with the group anytime. So if you want to venture off to a museum or try a different restaurant, by all means: Do it! The group will only be expected to stay together for transportation between cities.

Will you accommodate food restrictions?

Of course. Just tell us ahead of time when you sign up and we can make accommodations easily.

Will someone provide me with a list of tasks I need to complete for visas or pre-entry credentials

Yes, of course!

Do I need travel insurance?

Up to you! Some credit cards already include some sort of travel insurance (check with them). We tend to find the cheapest ones via our partners at G1G

Yemen

December 2025

Join us on a once in a lifetime journey to Southern Yemen, where this part of Yemen has been relatively safe from the Civil War that’s been taking place in the rest of the country. In the 70s and 80s, this part of the country used to be the republic of South Yemen, where ancient mud cities rise from desert valleys, time slows to the rhythm of call to prayer, and hospitality runs deeper than history. More than a trip, it’s a pilgrimage to a place few have been and even fewer understand.

We begin in Cairo, boarding a direct morning flight to Seiyun, the gateway to Yemen’s legendary Hadramaut Valley. From there, we’ll drive through centuries-old villages, UNESCO World Heritage cities, and surreal desert landscapes that feel as if they arose from another world.

Expect warm hospitality, unreal sunsets, and fly-on-the-wall vantage points of bustling markets and historic shrines, all accompanied by local guides who carry both stories and scars from a land witness to constant transformation.

Day 1: Cairo → Seiyun → Hawta

  • Fly from Cairo to Seiyun via Yemen Airways (9:45AM – 2:15PM).

  • Meet your local guide and head straight to a sunset viewpoint over Seiyun — the largest city in Southern Yemen.

  • Transfer to the tranquil town of Hawta for dinner and rest.

Day 2: Seiyun, Avnat & Tarim

  • Explore Seiyun’s Sultan Palace Museum, Al-Falas Palace, and the vibrant Al-Handal Souk.

  • Visit the shrines of Avnat, then continue to Tarim, a mud-brick marvel and center of Islamic scholarship.

  • Visit Al Mihdar Mosque, shop small markets, and return to Hawta by evening.

Day 3: Shibam & Wadi Doan

  • Step into Shibam, known as the Manhattan of Arabia — home to the world’s oldest skyscrapers.

  • Climb one of the famed mud towers for panoramic views.

  • Continue deep into Wadi Doan, stopping in the villages of Sif and Hajjrain.

  • Overnight at the cliffside Haid Al-Jizil Hotel, with sweeping views of the valley.

Day 4: Village Trek & Hidden Histories

  • Hike to Hawfah Village and Buqshan Palace.

  • Pass through Musainah, Ribad, and Qarn Majed — quiet villages largely untouched by outside influence.

  • Visit Al Khuraiba, and stop briefly at the former palace of Osama bin Laden’s family — now a relic of unintended legacy.

  • Return to Shibam for a golden-hour walk and sunset over its iconic skyline.

  • Overnight again in Hawta.

Day 5: Seiyun → Cairo

  • Early morning transfer to Seiyun airport.
  • Flight back to Cairo

Day 6

  • Optional extension to Niamey, Niger (inquire about it if interested!) before flying onwards to Cairo

Ski-In, Ski-Out in Vermont: Monsoon Diaries’ Annual December Ski Trip

For 15 years since 2009, every December we’ve road-tripped north for a weekend of snow, slopes, and the HoHoHo of hot tubs, hot pot, and hot cocoa in Vermont. What started as a casual off-the-books tradition: car pools from NYC, Boston, and Philly, 2 nights, everyone pitching in with food or potluck, has become a winter ritual that set the tone for so many of our monsoon adventures.

This year, we’re putting it on the books and leveling up. For the first time, we’ll be staying ski-in, ski-out at our local favorite (and Vermont’s biggest) Beast of the East at Killington, VT, so you can click into your skis and snowboards right from where you’re staying and end the day the same way.

For fifteen years we’ve kept these Vermont ski weekends quiet as a tradition passed on by word-of-mouth. Now we’re finally opening it up as an official Monsoon Diaries trip. If you’ve ever wanted to join the family at its coziest, this is the time.

Bundle up. Bring your appetite. Ski hard, hot pot harder.

  • December 19: Arrival into Killington, VT and settle in!
  • December 20-21: Ski, snowboard, apres, hot tub, snow tube, make lifelong memories!
  • December 21: Depart home, or stay longer!

Bundle up and join our most wintery Monsoon Diaries adventure yet: a week of skiing, community, and cinematic magic in Park City, Utah. Nestled in the Wasatch Range, Park City’s slopes are legendary, and you’ll be there just as the snow’s deepest and the mountain air crispest.

But that’s not all. From January 22–26, catch the final Sundance Film Festival in Park City, before it relocates to Colorado in 2027. This is the end of an era—where independent cinema and mountain culture collide. Imagine skiing in the morning, then wandering closed-off Main Street into a midnight film premiere, legacy talks, and red carpet energy that fuels memory.

What’s in store:

  • Daily Utah powder runs, hot tubs, fresh aprés energy, and local bites

  • Optional festival access for those who want to dip into the Sundance experience midweek

  • Group dinners, town strolls, popcorn-fueled post-ski nights

Why now matters:
It’s not just a ski trip! It’s a moment in time; Park City has hosted Sundance since the early 1980s, and this is its last year in the mountains we love.

Join us for fast turns, deep films, and shared warmth—before this chapter closes. Travel far, together with The Monsoon Diaries.

  • January 19: Arrival into Park City, UT
  • January 19-25: Ski, eat, co-work, make lifelong memories
  • January 25: Depart home, or stay longer for the Sundance Film Festival!

A 40% down payment is needed to secure your spot on the trip. We accept credit cards, cash (in person), PayPal, Zelle, Revolut, Square, Cash App, or Venmo.

What days should I book my flights to arrive?

Depends on what part of the trip you sign up for; please confirm with us directly before purchasing tickets!

Do you provide flight advice/support to get the cheapest flights?

Yep! We have expertise in this area and would be happy to assist you in booking the cheapest flights, finding hack fares, or work with loyalty mile programs to getting you free economy, business class, or first class flights.

Do I need visas?

Depends on your nationality and type of passport. People with USA and EU nationalities do not need visas. Otherwise, we can help you with this if you need any visas. Please ask!

Will someone provide me with a list of tasks I need to complete for visas or pre-entry credentials

Yes, of course!

Do I need travel insurance?

Up to you! Some credit cards already include some sort of travel insurance (check with them). We tend to find the cheapest ones via our partners at G1G

The Alps

Alpe d’Huez, France

March 25-28, 2026

Zermatt, Switzerland

March 29 – April 3, 2026

Embark on our biannual snow-filled escape with The Monsoon Diaries — this time to Zermatt, Switzerland, where world-class ski trails, sweeping alpine views, and steamy après-ski saunas set the stage for another unforgettable chapter.

Following last year’s winter wonderland in Hokkaido, the crew is reuniting in the car-free mountain village of Zermatt, nestled beneath the shadow of the Matterhorn. No cars, no combustion engines — just trains, taxis, or helicopters. It’s the Venice of the Alps, and it’s ours for the week.

We’ll be staying in luxury chalet accommodations, complete with on-site steam baths, salt grottos, and saunas, while giving you the freedom to roam, ski, snowboard, or simply soak it all in. Whether you’re hitting the slopes with an IKON pass or sipping hot chocolate at 3100 meters, you’ll be surrounded by a crew of good humans who show up for each other.

And since we’ll already be in the area — consider an optional pre-trip extension to Tomorrowland Winter in nearby Alpe d’Huez, France, from March 25–28. As always, we have early access to festival tickets, but space is limited — this event usually sells out fast, so reach out soon if you’re interested.

Join us for the magic. Travel far, together.

March 25-28:

  • Arrive via Paris, Lyon, or Geneva and transfer to Alpe d’Huez, a breathtaking alpine town that hosts Tomorrowland Winter.

  • Enjoy 4 days of music, snow sports, and alpine magic.

  • Accommodation: Central lodgings near the festival grounds.

  •

March 28:

  • Check out of your Alpe d’Huez lodging.

  • Option 1: Depart for home if your journey ends here.

  • Option 2: Continue your adventure by traveling onward to another European destination (e.g. Paris, Barcelona) or…

  • Option 3: Transfer to Zermatt for the next chapter (Group B).
If you choose Zermatt, we recommend staying the night of March 28 in Geneva, Lausanne, or Brig to break up the trip.

March 29:

  • Arrive in Zermatt by train. Check into your luxury chalet in the pedestrian-only village.

  • Optional daily skiing/snowboarding (IKON pass or local ski pass options available)

  • Other highlights:

    • Board Zermatt’s Gornergrat train, a cog railway choo-choo’ing its way up the steep mountainside through tunnels, over bridges and across ravines with beautiful views of the landscape and the majesty of the mountain range, and let its grandeur overwhelm you from the top. The panoramic views in every direction on the train is a must-see.
    • Stroll through Zermatt’s pedestrian-only village, filled with bars, restaurants, boutiques, souvenir shops, bakeries and shops selling Swiss cakes and chocolates.
    • Although we have free breakfasts, enjoy another breakfast at Fuchs Bakery, producing freshly baked croissants, sweets, and other goods with locally sourced ingredients.
    • If interested in the lifestyle of those who first staked a home here, pay a visit to Zermatlantis, the Matterhorn Museum
    • Dinner with a view at 3100 Kulmhotel Gornergrat, the highest hotel and restaurant in the Swiss Alps. Its restaurant, Vis-à-Vis, offers Swiss-centric meals made with local ingredients, including salmon trout, fondue, and pork cordon bleu.

April 3:

  • Check out of your chalet

  • Options:

    • Continue traveling through Switzerland (e.g., Lausanne, Lucerne, Zurich)

    • Relax with an extra day in Zermatt

    • Begin your journey home

The Trans-Canada Highway

Early Summer 2026

We’ve done it before on Route 66, then again across the USA during the pandemic — now it’s time for another epic monsoon, this time across the Trans-Canada Highway, beginning in the vibrant harbor city of Halifax.

From there, we’ll drive east to Prince Edward Island, wandering through the storybook landscapes of Charlottetown and paying our respects at the Anne of Green Gables house, before tracing the wild tides of the Bay of Fundy.

Our journey then carries us through the charming streets of Fredericton, and onward into the cobblestoned heart of Quebec City, where history feels alive at every corner. We’ll continue west into Ottawa and Toronto, each stop unfolding a new layer of Canada’s cultural mosaic.

In Toronto we shift gears (literally!) trading city streets for the open road in an RV, rolling across the sweep of Northern Ontario through Sault Ste. Marie and Thunder Bay, then into the heart of the Prairies with Winnipeg and the vibrant energy of Saskatoon.

The road crescendos in the Rockies, where legendary Banff and the Icefields Parkway will remind us why we travel. We finish in the coastal beauty of Vancouver, with an optional exhale across the water in the serene charm of Victoria.

This is more than a drive. It’s a thread stitching together a continent, a journey of friendships, landscapes, and stories waiting to be written.

Anticipated itinerary across 17-19 days:

  • Halifax, Nova Scotia
  • Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island
  • Bay of Fundy
  • Fredericton
  • Quebec City
  • Ottawa
  • Toronto
  • Sault Ste Marie
  • Thunder Bay
  • Winnipeg
  • Saskatoon
  • Edmonton
  • Banff
  • Vancouver
  • Victoria
